Details About L'Anse Aux Meadows

Located at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland, L'Anse aux Meadows is an 11th-century Viking settlement, the oldest known European settlement in the New World. The excavated remains of these wood-frame peat-turf buildings were discovered in 1960 by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad, and L'Anse aux Meadows was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
